Have you ever noticed that sometimes crochet calms you, and at other times it’s energising in just the right way? Ever tried to explain this to someone who doesn’t crochet? This three-hour workshop will help you to understand exactly why crochet makes you feel better. We will explore how crochet can be used intentionally to support your nervous system using the Window of Tolerance framework. Drawing on psychological science and Betsan Corkhill’s 'projects for a purpose' approach, we’ll look at how repetition, complexity, texture, colour and structure can help you use crochet intentionally to enhance your psychological wellbeing. Designed for all crocheters, this session blends accessible theory, discussion and short practical experiments to deepen your understanding of crochet as a powerful tool for wellbeing.
You will be provided with a workbook with the session information and worksheets for future use.
Please note: Due to this being an educational session, there will not be opportunity to discuss individual psychological issues.
Presenter: Louise Pennant is a registered clinical and health psychologist and founder of Slow Psychology, a practice dedicated to integrating evidence-based psychological science with traditional handcraft. Based on the Gold Coast, her work explores how crochet and knitting can function as intentional nervous system regulation tools rather than simply hobbies. Louise specialises in supporting women experiencing stress, overwhelm and burnout, and has developed structured therapeutic programs that combine cognitive behavioural principles with rhythmic, hands-on craft practices. Passionate about preserving traditional textile arts, she bridges contemporary neuroscience with heritage craft, demonstrating how purposeful making can enhance wellbeing across clinical and community settings.

Assigned pooling yarn is designed differently from planned pooling yarn and from variegated yarn. Assigned pooling works differently from both types of yarn.
Assigned pooling yarn does the work for you and is totally random; there is no front or back, as the ASSIGNED stitches will appear when the pop of colour appears in the yarn.
Assigned pooling turns that uncertainty into pure creative control.
Kathy Vasic guides you through the logic and magic behind assigned pooling, showing you how to work with yarn rather than fight it.
With over 50 years of crochet experience, Kathy shares practical techniques, insider tips and design thinking that will change how you see variegated yarn forever. Perfect for confident crocheters ready to deepen their skills and unlock bold, satisfying results.
Workshop notes: Yarn should be assigned pooling yarn with approximately 25% of the skein dyed as a contrast to the rest of the skein. The yarn shown is from the Australian Wool Store.
Ready to move beyond flat stitches and add real depth to your crochet?
This intermediate workshop is for crocheters who feel the pull to try something richer, but don’t want to get lost in confusing patterns. You’ll explore how texture really works, from bold stitch combinations like alpine to striking single-stitch textures such as front post puffs.

Ready to take Tunisian crochet beyond flat panels? In this immersive intermediate workshop, Arunima Goel introduces Tunisian crochet in the round, a technique that unlocks striking geometric designs with surprising ease.
You’ll learn how to use a double-ended hook, work a continuous spiral, and alternate colours between forward and return passes to create depth without complexity.
Starting with 8-ply yarn builds confidence before applying the method to the bold Tara Blanket. With just two stitches and a rhythmic four-row repeat, this is the kind of skill that looks impressive and feels deeply satisfying to master.
What if a few small changes could completely transform the way your crochet behaves? Hyperbolic Crochet introduces a technique that looks dramatic but is surprisingly accessible.
Led by designer Jill Rakich, this easy-level workshop breaks down the simple maths behind hyperbolic shaping and shows how increases create ripples, curves and movement.
You’ll learn the core principles, explore how they can add texture and interest to everyday projects, and make a small hanging ornament within the session. It’s a satisfying mix of logic and creativity that builds confidence while opening your eyes to a whole new approach to design.
