Learn how to read Image Overlay Crochet Terminology and the special IOC chart to create and even design intricate patterns that tell a story in yarn, inspired by the patterns that you know from the Wrapped in Jamie CAL.

IOC is based on US crochet terminology. Though we will discuss all the basics of IOC, students are required to be familiar and confident using the magic circle, working a single, double, treble and double treble crochet. Please note that this class is not suitable for students who are absolute beginners or want to learn to crochet.

Working in Image Overlay Crochet allows you to work with stitches you are already familiar with to create a textured surface as seen in the ‘Outlander’ inspired patterns of the Wrapped in Jamie CAL. The most compelling feature of these patterns are that they ‘paint a picture’ using either only one colour of yarn or as many as you like.

Workshop participants will receive a set of ideas for items that can be created during the workshop. Some will require a bit of ‘homework’ to make the best of the time we have together at the workshop and to ensure that you can immediately start with the feature part of the design.

You choose the item that you want to make during the workshop and learn how to apply the design to the other item ideas, such as coffee mug cosies, bowls, cowls, hats, bags, pouches or even garments.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to read and write an IOC chart, follow a pattern and create a project written in basic IOC terminology. You will understand how you can adjust the supplied patterns to all sorts of items, and you will leave with at least one finished project and the tools to start designing and writing your own story in yarn.

Teacher: Petra Creutziger
Duration: Morning session: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Skill level: Intermediate and above
Inclusions: General admission ticket for 1 June 2023

Please bring the following to workshop:

  • yarn of your choice, preferably 8ply cotton, 50 – 100g (no fluffy or variegated yarn; one or two solid colours)
  • matching hook (which would be 3.5 - 4.5mm, depending on your tension; if you bring a hook of your choice plus one size up and down, we can establish the most suitable option)
  • scissors and yarn needle
  • 3 sets of 3-4 stitch markers, if you like to work with them; 1 colour per set, 3 different colours
  • coloured pens or pencils in 3 different colours (same as your stitch markers)
  • openness to forget what you think you know about crochet and the willingness to be challenged

Please note: This session will be delivered in-person only - no online offering will be made available.

Sessions run concurrently on each day, so please only choose one full-day session OR no more than one each morning or afternoon sessions per day!

Please read our event terms including cancellation and privacy policy before booking.
