Have you ever yearned to make your own yarn from a glorious puff of roving - a cloud of wool fibres - and gazed with envy at those who can seemingly pull magic from a wad of fluff?  Kathleen Hansen is our magic maker - a founding Committee Member of Crochet Guild Australia and a gifted spinner and teacher of this ancient craft.

Learn to Spin One-off Yarns for Crochet.

Why spin when you can buy yarn everywhere? And why spindle spin yarn specifically?

Handspun yarn is unique, one-off and exactly the colour and ply(gauge) you need. Spindles are cheap tools as compared to most other crafts, and you can spin anywhere, while waiting a few minutes or an hour. It is entirely portable and can fit in any regular handbag or tote. You can spin in the car ( as a passenger of course), on public transport, and experienced spindlers can spin while walking even.

Another great thing about spinning is that you can make a yarn superior to those we buy (with a few exceptions).  You can buy Aussie or NZ fibre and fleece down the road at local farms, at wool shows, or online. Australian produced and processed wool is one of the world’s best and you will be supporting our farmers, Indi dyers and fibre mills.  Most of the yarn we buy comes from overseas, and much of it is acrylic or a blend.

Finally, spinning is an ancient art that is making a resurgence. It is addictive, it is meditative, and therapeutic. It is a slow craft in a fast paced world.

I will bring examples of my spindle spun yarn, and samples of completed items using spindle spun yarn so the participants can feel the difference..

Kits will be available which include an Ashford spindle and fibre, in a handmade wrist bag. (Additional cost $35 ea)

Kathleen will also provide a demonstration on how to spin using a spinning wheel in this workshop too.
